In 1903, a shy 16-year-old boy boarded a boat, left his native land of Croatia and came to New Zealand.  Lured by stories of how much money could be made from working on the NZ gumfields, he made his way up to the Far North.  After initially struggling with the harsh conditions, the cultural differences between the Croatians and British, and feeling terribly homesick, he soon became immersed in the land and the people. He developed a close bond with the local Maori people, eventually marrying a Maori woman named Makareta Raharuhi who came from a prestigious family in the area. They had a large family together and he went on to become a well-loved kaumatua (a person of senior social status) of the Far North.

This young boy was named Lovro Petricevich, and we, the Petricevich family, are his descendants.  Dune Rider Unique Tours is the name of our family-owned and operated tour company with over 20 years of experience.
